6 uncapped players in the SA squad. Decent chance for us to claim an away series victory.

Hopefully the conditions will be a bit more bowler friendly

SA batting looks a bit thin now that Amla has gone.
Bit like a lot of international teams at the moment

Re: England tour of South Africa
Sven,

There do seem to be a lot of teams in the midst of a fairly lengthy transition right now. The other day an Aussie friend and I were trying to compile a team of the decade and it was noticeable how few real stars there were there compared to the previous decade or so, and how most of those there were had either started in the previous decade and/or were now coming to the end or had already retired.

I'm not sure there is one truly outstanding Test nation at the moment. India are probably the closest but I'm not convinced they would hold their own against some of the fairly recent great English, Aussie, or South African teams. New Zealand are decent, but if they're ever second in the rankings I dare to suggest that says somrthing about the overall quality of the era.

India are definitely number 1 especially at home.
Not sure they are near the great teams of the past .... they have struggled in England for example.
A few countries are unsettled and in transition and most seem to be finding it hard to find reliable TEST MATCH batsmen.

SA are trying to get ABDV back.

Hopefully not in time for this series

This is the day of flat pitches and useless balls. The kookaburra is complete shit and the ECB are continually fiddling with the Duke's ball to reduce the size of he seam.

The Ashes this year was one of the few true contests. The Duke's was the 2018 version so it actually changed direction and batsmen that applied themselves flourished. The others didn't. Those that did not have the technique to survive a 6 hour examination were sent packing.

I do think it's a difficult job to get the balance right, between bat, ball and pitch, but 67 all out followed by 359 to win a game on the 5th day is surely the correct recipe?

I look forward to that happening sometime. The Headingly test this summer, finished on the 4th day.

I watched the highlights again last night, in deference to Stokes and an astonishing game. Thought it said day 5, which surprised me, 'cos I thought it only lasted 4 days too.

Re: England tour of South Africa
I’ve always thought the best Test matches have enough in the pitch that both first innings are around 270 to 300 but with enough pace so that good players can score quickly.
Ideally you end up with the pitch taking some spin on the last day and one team chasing 250 to 300 to win.

Re: England tour of South Africa
I don't have the stats but it certainly feels as if the number of Tests going into day five, let alone with all results possible, has dramatically reduced. Balls and pitches probably do deserve their share of blame, but equally the lack of truly top drawer players which means most of the time for too long now it has been a case of home dominance time and again.

A five day pitch should.........

Be survival on the first morning, then gradually improving, not because it seams all over the place. Swing, some movement off the pitch

Best for batting on day 2/3.

Day 4; foot on the accelerator, wicket becomes unpredictable, occasionally.

Day 5; breaking up, turning, plenty of footholds.

Alan Butcher of Surrey thought bating on a snaking seamer was great fun as long as you didn't mind missing the ball.

BA Richards said h enjoyed the challenge of a huge turner.

Robin Jackman said if it seamed to much batsmen couldn't nick it.

DK Lillee said he bowled with more control on flat, dead pitches.

Richard Hadlee liked bright green wickets.

Re: England tour of South Africa
With the Headingley Test when Australia batted on the first day in the dark the ball moved all over the place which made it almost impossible conditions.
They made some runs because there was TOO MUCH movement and as long as you didn’t mind every second ball beating the bat you could make some runs.
The sun came out on day 2 and the pitch calmed down.
So there was enough movement just to catch the edges with less movement. Hence England 67 all out.

Good to see the Big Bash back though unfortunately the Scorchers are as bad as last season.
How they have managed to let two West Australians in Josh Phillipe and D’arcy Short play for SOMEONE ELSE is beyond me.

If you win the toss and bowl you are backing yourselves to bowl the other side out by stumps.
England on track at lunch

New Zealand win the toss and bowl in front of 80,000 at the MCG.
Australia 257/4 at stumps , Steve SMITH 77no Marnus LABUSCHAGNE 63
